Episode 90: Black Fatherhood

October 2, 2019

For today’s episode, we tackle dangerous myths and misconceptions about black fatherhood by interviewing Dr. Lena Green—founder of the Akira Center and Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in fatherhood, trauma, and parent-child bonding. During our conversation, we discuss her motivation for pursuing a doctorate (34:10) and why she developed her practice around fatherhood (38:00). We then discuss the realities of black fatherhood and how young dads navigate issues such as intimate partner violence (42:00) and paternal perinatal depression (43:53). Dr. Green then provides insight into how she helps fathers break through silence around their experiences of trauma and anxiety (48:50) and shares success stories from her work with the Akira Center (54:32). We close by having a conversation about research-informed practice (59:00), what you should look for in a therapist (1:00:59), the importance of prioritizing mental health services (1:04:20), reasons to seek therapy (1:06:07), and advice for individuals interested in becoming therapist (1:07:20).
